St Winifred's School Southampton

Admission Process

We recommend that you arrange to visit us prior to making an application for a place. This might be at one of our many open events, or alternatively by making an appointment to tour the school with the Registrar.

The next stage is to complete an Application form for either the Year 7 Entrance Assessment day on 3rd February 2018 or for two taster days in all other year groups. A payment of £50 is required for this stage.

Once your child has sat the Assessment and/or completed the taster days, we then consider their application and a decision is made whether to offer a place. To accept an offer of a place, parents pay the £200 deposit.

The Application Form is available to download and print and you can read our Terms and Conditions of Admissions here.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age can my child join the School?

Most students join us at age 11 (Year 7).

Entry into Years 8 to 11

Older students may join the School subject to the availability of places in the appropriate year group.

Will my child have to pass an examination to be accepted for a place?

All prospective students sit an Entrance Assessment, which - for those joining us at the start of Year 7 - comprises written tests in English, Maths and Reasoning skills.  The objective of the assessment is to enable us to identify each child's strengths and areas where they may require additional support as early as possible.

The Entrance Assessment is held on a Saturday at the end of January/beginning of February each year. If a prospective student is unable to sit the Assessment on this day, we may make arrangements for them to sit this during the following week.  Please note that academic scholarships are only offered to those who sit the Assessment on the Saturday.

Entry into years 8-11 may be possible throughout the academic year, subject to the availability of places.   The Entrance Assessment for prospective students in these year groups will comprise tests in English, Maths, Science and the foreign language they are currently studying.

Can I apply for help with school fees?

A number of academic scholarships - offering a discount of between 15%-33% - are offered each year to those children who obtain the highest marks in the entrance assessment which takes place on the last Saturday in January.

Scholarships for Music, Art and Sport may also be awarded, with fee discounts up to a maximum of 20%.

In addition, parents may apply for means-tested bursaries, which are based on the parents' income.  The maximum assistance is normally 50% of the total fees.

Are discounts offered for siblings?

Whilst there is a full paying brother or sister at the school, the first sibling receives a 7.5% discount.  Any additional siblings receive 10%. The siblings may be at either The Gregg or St. Winifred's School and must be attending at the same time.

Is transport available to and from School?

Yes! Over 90% of our students travel to and from school by our own fleet of Gregg School minibuses and dedicated drivers.

Please note that bus routes are reviewed annually, and we are always willing to consider the addition of new routes if a demand exists. Prospective parents should be assured that if the current routes do not include a stop near their home, we will endeavour to change the route accordingly.
